:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Michael Burton -- A fraud : This is one of the best books in American history, but this product is NOT what it claims to be. It appears to have been translated from German into English. After I struggled to read this, I realized that it is something that others have encountered in Amazon, people in Germany or elsewhere who use auto-translation to translate the version of the book in their language, making a obviously bad translation. AMAZON has no way to verify that a book is what it claims to be. Do not buy this version. After I paid my money to this fraud, I managed to buy the correct version for 99 cents. Douglass is one of the greatest masters of the English language ever. He never wrote a word that was off that mark in any way. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lori Holland -- Need a Magnifying Glass to Read : Wow! This book is such a disappointment. The writing INSIDE the book is teeny, teeny, tiny. The writing on the OUTSIDE of this book is large. I don’t know who this book is designed to appeal to but I’m sure that everyone will be disappointed by its gorgeous cover of a whitewashed Frederick Douglass picture only to find a more lifelike picture of the Great Orator on the back cover. Then one turns the cover to see microscopic printing. My goodness! So many missed opportunities to get this right. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from B Daniel Blatt -- An Indispensable Autobiography : All too many Americans, alas, have only a limited knowledge of our history. While our fellows may recognize a few names, how many can identify James Madison as the principal author of the Constitution—or the reasons which compelled him (and many others, including George Washington) to meet in Philadelphia to draft it, six years after the British surrender at Yorktown? (And how many can identify that battle as the last significant conflict of the Revolutionary War?) ( Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rich Halecki -- Awesome : I like reading personal histories. I find that they shed light on Big History. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Beyond The Realms -- This is definitely one of the better autobiographies I've ever read : MY BONDAGE AND MY FREEDOM is a book that should be mandatory reading for every high school student. The lessons it has within its pages are filled with depth and honesty as it shows the reader a harrowing, brutal and heart breaking look at slavery. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carolyn -- Should be compulsory reading in all US and UK schools : A searing description of his life as a slave and ultimately as a freeman. Frederick Douglass writes with the insight of a man who saw the brutal impacts of chattel slavery on black people individually, as families, and as communities. I find it hard to imagine that any author could surpass his eloquence in capturing the evils of slavery. He is also fair in his assessment of its impact on slaveholders, and how their politicians and churches helped to maintain that system. Every teenager should have to study this book in school in the US, UK and any other country with a history of anti-black chattel slavery. I recommend this book highly.
